Update, 4:58 p.m. UC Police confirmed that a man died at People’s Park on Friday.

UC police Sgt. Sabrina Reich said the man was found inside a tent at People’s Park, and Berkeley firefighters pronounced him dead at the scene.

Reich said no foul play is suspected, but the cause of death is currently unknown.

The Alameda County Coroner’s Office will identify the man once his family is notified of his death.

A sheriff’s sergeant said the office responded to People’s Park to investigate the possible death after getting a call at 1:55 p.m. Witnesses said UC police and the coroner’s office were still at the scene as of 4 p.m.

Park occupants said they believe one person sleeping at the park died overnight. The man is well-known among the community members, they added.
