A 17-year-old boy was hospitalized after being wounded in a shooting Monday evening in West Berkeley, authorities report.

At about 5:30 p.m, police responded to multiple calls of gunfire in a residential neighborhood near Sixth Street and Channing Way and found a teenager suffering from a gunshot wound to the neck, police said.

The teenager was taken to Highland Hospital and is expected to survive, BPD Lt. Melanie Turner said.

Officers contacted numerous witnesses in the area who said they heard a group of people arguing near LifeLong Medical Care Administrative Office, in the 800 block of Channing Way, followed by a gunshot. Officers are canvassing the area for evidence and video surveillance.

As of June 13, two people had been killed and eight wounded in shootings in Berkeley this year.

In 2020, seven people were wounded but there were no gun-related fatalities.

Berkeley has now had 22 confirmed gunfire calls in 2022.

BPD asks anyone with information about this case to call the Homicide Unit at 510-981-5741.
