James Reagan, beloved community activist, dies at 74

Reagan advocated for homeless services throughout his decades in Berkeley, and was a well-known member of activist communities.

According to BPD, 145 people sustained moderate or serious injuries in 141 crashes in 2021 involving cyclists or pedestrians. Five others died.

“He was just always that steady rock,” one friend said of Bubacarr Kora. “He’s that person who would always be there for you.”

People who knew her said she was incredibly kind and a “force to be reckoned with.”

Authorities did not immediately know whether the man lived in the area or was visiting.

Police do not yet know what may have caused the crash but are looking into whether Street may have experienced a medical emergency.

Police performed CPR on the man until firefighters arrived to take over life-saving efforts, but they were unsuccessful.

It was the highest number of traffic deaths the city has seen since at least 1984, the Berkeley Police Department found.

Ransom, who was shot and killed on I-880 on Friday, was guided by Berkeley mentors and the city’s multicultural spirit.

The Police Accountability Board has indicated plans to launch its own independent investigation.
